Below are answers to some frequently asked questions.
Question:
When did Radio Twente Gold start broadcasting?
Answer:
Radio Twente Gold was founded in January 2021. That’s when preparations began. Test broadcasts started in the spring of 2022. So quite a bit of time has passed since then. It wasn’t easy to get an antenna for a medium-wave station working properly either.
Question:
Do you really play music from old, fragile gramophone records?
Answer:
The ancient music from the 1920s to 1949 is on 78-rpm gramophone records. These are made of shellac, and are heavy and extremely fragile. If you drop one, it shatters into pieces. So you have to handle them with care. To prevent them from breaking, all that music has been digitised. Now they’re computer files, which are much easier to handle. Still, there’s something special about handling those old records and placing them on a gramophone.
Question:
Can I request a song?
Answer:
Yes, you can, but there isn’t a dedicated request programme. I’ll do my best to include the requested track in the broadcast, provided it fits in with the rest of Radio Twente Gold’s music selection. I’ll let you know in advance when the track will be played. Requests can be submitted on Radio Twente Gold’s Facebook page.
Question:
Why is the station called Radio Twente Gold?
Answer:
Twente is a region in the eastern part of the Netherlands. It encompasses the most urbanised and easternmost part of the province of Overijssel. The region’s borders are defined by the Overijssel region of Salland to the north-west and west, the German County of Bentheim to the north-east and east, and the region of Achterhoek to the south. Twente has approximately 620,000 inhabitants, most of whom live in its three largest cities: Almelo, Hengelo and Enschede.
Question:
Is this a pirate station or a secret station?
Answer:
Neither. Radio Twente Gold is not a pirate station. The station has been granted a broadcasting licence by the Media Authority and a frequency by the Telecom Agency. It pays a substantial fee for this every year. Everything is therefore properly organised and in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
